SkyMall Magazine, QR Codes Great Recipe for In-flight Marketing

Advertisers: Place QR Codes in SkyMall Magazine to drive customer engagement.

On a recent trip from Minnesota, I put down my Samsung Galaxy Note and phone and picked up a copy of the SkyMall Magazine from the seat pocket in front of me that held that, along with other airplane related content, and browsed through each page noticing some practical and not-so-practical items the magazine had to offer.  Some items were interesting, but some items in my opinion, needed a little more information to help a potential consumer understand the full value of the product shown.

As I looked at these items, I thought, "What a perfect example of how QR Codes could be used to drive customer engagement and educate them at the same time!" So I took a few photos of some of the items to demonstrate how SkyMall Magazine could have taken advantage of this wonderful opportunity to educate and engage with airline passengers using mobile technology and in-flight Wi-Fi.

Instead of only providing the option of having people enter the contest by writing down their entries on a page in the magazine, this could have also included a QR code that, when scanned, would lead users to a mobile micro site that provides information about the contest and allows them to enter right from their mobile device.  I now wonder how many people actually completed the form and mailed it in to SkyMall Magazine for that contest.

The benefits of Train Reaction Device could be better understood and conveyed to the user if SkyMall Magazine had used a QR code that played a YouTube video, for example, that showed how easy it is to assemble and use the Train Reaction Device with their luggage.

The iPhone Photo Printer looks like a pretty cool product to own, although I am a proud owner of multiple Samsung devices, and for someone who has an iPhone, offering them an incentive for purchasing the iPhone Photo Printer would probably spark an increase sales.

So, I hope this information has inspired you to look around at your business to find creative ways to implement marketing campaigns that both engage and educate your customers.
