Review: Starter Logg Product at Walmart uses QR codes to Engage Customers

Starter Logg Uses QR codes on Product Packaging

This is a picture of a product called, StarterLogg, that I found while shopping at Walmart. It contained a QR code, so naturally, I took a picture of the packaging and scanned the QR code so I could share what I found. When you scan the mobile barcode with your smartphone, it takes you to a mobile web site that asks for your location (I declined) then displays a mobile landing page that allows you to enter to win into a contest for your chance to "Win a getaway to Whistler, British Colombia for two!"  The mobile friendly landing page also contains information on other products, F.A.Q., prizes, contact information, as well as some videos about their other products they offer.

My Review of This QR Code

When reviewing quick response code campaigns, there are a few things that I look at to determine a "rating" for it.  The scale is simple, 4 out of 4 receives an "Excellent" rating, 3 out of 4 receives a "Good" rating, 2 or less receives "Try Again" rating.

1.  Is the QR code placed in a visible location that will be easy for users to scan.

2.  If the QR code points to a URL, does the code direct users to a mobile friendly landing page?

3.  Is it large enough to scan easily?

4.  Are there additional instructions for people who may not know how to scan QR codes?

StarterLogg did a great job with this one.  Their mobile barcode was placed in a highly visible location which made it very easy to scan.  The URL lead to a mobile website...awesome!  It also contained an alternative URL for the user to visit in case they couldn't scan the barcode.

StarterLogg received an Excellent Rating!

More about QR Codes

Quick response codes are also known as mobile barcodes, are those funny looking squares that are often displayed on newspaper ads, magazines, product packaging, business cards and other printed items.   Your smartphone scans or decodes these mobile bar codes using what is known as a quick response reader.  There are many types of readers available, click this link to help you find a reader for your Android, Blackberry, iPhone, Windows Phone, or other type of smart phone.
